An air conditioning engineering student died Wednesday when his home collapsed on a residential street in southwest Houston.
The Houston Fire Department said the man’s body was discovered in a driveway on East Avenue, at the intersection of East and Cypress streets, about 2:30 p.m.
The man was a student at the University of Houston, said Lt.
Robert Toney, who was an engineering student at Texas A&M University when he was killed.
Toney said he and another student were in the driveway when the homeowner pulled out a ladder and used it to clear the home.
The homeowner had no apparent injuries.
Toward the end of the day, Toney said, he and the other student were able to evacuate the home and evacuate the students.
He said they tried to put a fire out, but there was nothing left to put out.
The university said in a statement the student’s death was tragic.
“The student was a member of the Houston Fire Rescue and we are deeply saddened by this news,” the university said.
